Take 5: Liz Davis

She won the hearts of thousands last year on NBC's The Voice, where she represented Nashville on Team Blake during the series' third season. Since then, Liz Davis has been bringing her own brand of sass and kick-ass country to Music City. If you missed my two part interview with the singer with the big ole pipes from earlier this year, catch up now (part one / part two). And now, Davis is kicking off Tragic Kingdom's newest segment: Take 5

We all love to know what inspires our favorite stars and want to know what - or who - is behind the lyrics of our favorite songs, but you can read about that anywhere. Take 5 gets you all the answers to the questions you never wanted to know (but maybe secretly do). So pop your corn and grab a shot glass cause we're about to Take 5 with Nashville's Liz Davis.

Take 5 with Liz Davis
Chris: If you were cast on Bravo's Real Housewives franchise, what would your opening line be?

Liz Davis: [laughs] I watch all the Real Housewives, by the way... My line would be, “Some people call me a Fireball, but I prefer mine in a shotglass”

Chris: When not entertaining crowds of people with your music or writing, what do you do for fun during downtime?

Liz:  I like to be outside. I am outdoorsy kinda girl. I like to walk my dogs – Gaga and Madison [after the singer and her hometown in Mississippi]. And I love being around my friends.

Chris: If you were stranded on a deserted island without food or electricity and could only have 5 things with you, what would they be? And why? -

Liz: Toothbrush / Toothpaste, Razor, Supply of Herbal Essances - I want to be the cleanest person on the island, -  Boombox & CD’s, and an endless supply of batteries. I can’t be on an island without music. And if I could bring one bonus, it'd be some beer!

Chris: Where is your favorite place to travel (for fun) and/or be when not working on, or touring for, music?

Liz: I love Destin, Florida! I grew up going 2 times a year and I have great memories from those trips.

Chris: This is probably the most important question of all: 'NSYNC or BSB?

Liz: Truthfully? BSB! I was Backstreet FOR LIFE! I was kinda mad when NSYNC took over. I was a hardcore Nick Carter fan. Funny story, I actually had the opportunity to write with him once, but I wasn’t sure I could do it. I mean what would I say? I’m Team Nick forever. Don’t tell him though... [she smiles]

Chris: Hopefully he won’t read this.
[Note: I think we all know that even though I may have said that to make our country girl feel comfortable, you know I actually DO hope he reads this and, despite his recent engagement, the two end up making beautiful music together.]

Look for Liz Davis' new music coming soon and be sure to "Like" Liz on Facebook to stay up to date with her for all the latest.

Interview with The CO

Readers of Tragic Kingdom are no stranger to the Nashville based pop-rockers, The CO. In 2011, I introduced the trio as an Artist to Watch and later in the year premiered their single "Camo" first on the site. Then, earlier this year, Tragic Kingdom was the exclusive destination to listen to the band's sophomore record Keep It Together in full before its January 8 release. Almost two months after the release of the record, I sat down with Troy, Nate and Collin of The CO to talk about the new tunes, what 2013 has in store for them and what all those tweets about 'COhorts' mean to them.

Interview with The CO
Chris Vetrano: Alright, I know you’ve addressed this before in interviews (and with me personally), but being from Colorado it’s my duty to ask: Why the name ‘The CO’ and what does it mean?

Troy Akers: Collin and I were trying to brainstorm a new name for the band when our music started taking a turn towards what was really us. We wanted something that didn't necessarily pigeon-hole the band into one meaning or when someone actually read "The CO" they thought of... you know... screaming babies. The CO is whatever the fan wants it to be. For me, I want a new listener to think of The CO as the definition equalling their favorite song. Or what a song actually means to them. There's fun insider things like T + C can stand for Troy and Collin...early on. Or a lot of us are in love with Colorado.

Collin Brace: I've been in love with Colorado since I was there the first time when I was 10. My wife is from CO and I have a lot of friends out there and I'm determined to retire out there.. So i guess you could say The CO just made sense.

Chris: You just released your long awaited sophomore record Keep It Together. What was the process like in recording this record and what took so long between this and your debut?

Troy: On the outside, it must have seemed like it took forever. But in the inner-circle we are always writing. So singles that we put out like "Just Can't" and "Camo" were only pre-cursers. We began writing for this record as soon as the first EP was done. Ultimately we ended up with over 40 songs to choose from...if not more. A full record takes time...and that's just wanted us to be sure of—a record that hit on all heart-strings and was worthy of being fully who we are.

Chris: Well, it was well worth the wait! Now that the record is finally out, what are the plans to promote it? Will The CO be hitting the road?

Nate Fleming: Fingers crossed! That is definitely our main focus right now. Ideally we will be getting opening spots for some of the bigger touring bands out there.

Troy: Yes! Our first stop for spring is SXSW, so that should be fun. After that, we'll be hitting NYC and LA into the summer as well as some regional shows with other bands. We haven't been out in so long...so it's gonna feel great.

Chris: Is this going to be your first time in Austin for SXSW? What are you looking forward to most about it?

Nate:  It will be the first time as a band. I think I’m mostly looking forward to the TexMex.

Troy: I honestly have heard Austin is the best place in Texas. And since I feel like most of Texas is a hot oven, I am excited to see what it has to offer. I'm a huge fan of Johnny Cash...and I know there is a bar there that is all Johnny Cash themed. SO...I'm gonna find that and stay there.

Chris: Well I am sure that your time in Austin will definitely earn you some new COhorts. Speaking of which, Troy, you’re very active with the band’s (and your own) social media and engaging with the fans. Where did the name 'COhorts' come from?

Troy: COhorts is a funny thing. It started out as #COaters [on Twitter] and I really am not sure where that came from. Since we really didn't know what it meant we looked at something that had more of a special meaning. Everyone knows that nowadays a band is not a band without fans...and even more...without social media. That's why these amazing people are so important to us. In a sense, I see the COhorts as our partners in crime. Wherever they live. Germany. Arkansas. Sweden. They are our flag-bearer. They represent us until we get to them. They're just as important as anyone else on our team...if not more. They're our hands and feet. Partners in crime and music and what we believe to be a movement of this music.

Chris: Well speaking of movements, you generated a large online buzz after releasing a couple of collaborations with YouTube’s Tyler Ward, who’s known best for his cover tunes. Will The CO be releasing more videos – either on your own or collaborations – in the future?

Collin: We will never stop making videos, its such a perfect way to connect with our fans internationally. Plus we are all so artistic and creative that we just really love doing videos. We'll be doing a new full production music video with Sean Hagwell in April. I can say that it will be a whole other level. We also plan on doing another with my brother Evan Brace, who's done most of ours thus far.

Troy: We love Tyler—and I think there is no doubt that we could possibly do some more stuff with him. We owe a lot to him being so brave in featuring two of our songs. It was a ride.

Chris: Nate, you’ve been known to turn out some rad remixes under your DJ name DJN8, including one for “Frequency” from KIT. When did you start and what track that you’ve remixed is your favorite? Where can we hear it?

Nate: I started a couple years ago the same way I feel like a lot of DJ’s do. I’m really into the production side of recording, but not so much the songwriting. So, I just take the vocals from existing songs and see how creative I can get with it. My favorite track I’ve ever remixed was probably "Climax" by Usher. The production on the original track by Diplo was genius. That remix is still hidden away somewhere on one of my hard drives, but I also really loved how the "Frequency" remix turned out, which you can get on our website.

Chris: Awesome! I have a feeling that hard drive could provide the soundtrack to a great dance party or two. And if I am still invited to your place after Collin's surprise birthday party a couple years ago (for those not in the know, don't ask), I'll be there moving like Jagger. Speaking of said lead singer, Collin, what artists do you draw inspiration from when it comes to performing live?

Collin: My inspiration comes from the other guys on that stage with me. I want nothing more than to make them proud, they work so hard and they deserve my best. My inspiration doesn't come from artists if I'm being honest. I'd say right now I don't even have a favorite artist - besides Gregory Alan Isakov. My inspiration comes from the bigger story Im trying to write. It comes from the mentors behind the scenes that have my back and keep me on track. It comes from our team. It comes from my wife, and without being cliche' my greatest inspiration comes from an intimate relationship with Jesus [Christ].

Chris: Here's a question for each of you. What is your favorite song from Keep It Together and why?

Troy: That's is a tie for me. "Frequency" and "Two Against One." "Frequency" was the first song that I was thinking up for the new album. I wanted to go completely out there. And thankfully, Nate let it run when we put a demo down. I was terrified becos it exuded all of this insane emotion ... passion ... even sex appeal. It's all about the music. I envisioned it being our Hollywood song. Something that was fun but something that got lodged in the listeners ear. My fave line is, "you hear the DJ cry / give me songs till I die." I live by that. "Two Against One" was a song I almost threw away. On a demo night, I remember showing Nate the song and told him I really didn't think it was anything. But he insisted, we put a piano track down and it just happened. The words even now... I have no idea where they came from, but they're some of my favorite words. And it's meant more and more as time has gone on.

Chris: Nate and Collin, what about you guys?

Nate: "Two Against One" - the feel and flow of the song is something way different than anything else we’ve ever done. I really love how it builds into the bridge but doesn't get too explosive. The lyrics are really great as well!

Collin: Which of your children is favorite? You answer that and I'll answer your question. [laughs]

Chris: I don't have any children, so that's easy for me, but fair enough. Well then let's pull focus from your own project, what are your favorite artists and/or songs so far from 2013?

Collin: Macklemore and Imagine Dragons.

Nate: I've had the new Tegan & Sara album on repeat ever since it came out. "Closer" is my jam right now.

Troy: "Stay" by Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko - mainly because I think Mikky Ekko is a bad-to-the-bone writer. I look up to him a lot.

Chris: All good choices indeed! Well it's been fun guys. Last question for the readers, what is the best thing about being in a band?

Nate:  The best part of being in a band is definitely the brotherhood. It's like running a business with your best friends. I know that whatever happens inside or outside of music I've got two guys that will always have my back.

Troy: Without these guys, or getting to be roommates with Nate, I don't know what I would do some days.

Collin: Each of us truly care for the other first, and then we focus on music. We all understand that giving up on anything isn't an option, we keep each other fighting. And of course when we travel it always throws me back to those awesome grade school sleepovers - Troy keeps the party alive!

Tragic Kingdom Presents: Andy Davis "Dashes"

One of the coolest parts about the music industry is when two artists come together to create an epic collaboration. Sometimes they result in the form of a great radio single-paring like when R&B's Rihanna enlisted Nashville indie-rocker Mikky Ekko for her chart-topping single "Stay," or when two of music's juggernauts collide to make the world 'move like Jagger', like Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera did last summer. Other times the best collaborations are the ones that aren't as widely talked about, the collaboration of two artists coming together to write a great song.

In this case, two of the coolest emerging talents coming together on Tyler Ward's first EP of original tunes. If you're not yet familiar with the YouTube sensation who is quickly making a name for himself with his original work, check out my interview with him here. Andy Davis, a seasoned performer and songwriter from Nashville, worked with Ward for the project and the pairing resulted in one cool-as-hell track called "Dashes." That's the brilliance of Nashville and the artist community. Artists helping artists, working together to create something unique and fresh.

Listen to Tyler's version of the single now here, but only on Tragic Kingdom can you check out Davis performing the co-penned track (live from Tragic Kingdom's rooftop deck). There's more from the Nashville singer coming in the next few months, so be sure to hit that "Like" button on the left hand side of the page to stay up-to-date with yours truly (V for Vetrano)!

Like what you hear? Pick up a copy of Ward's Hello. Love. Heartbreak. on iTunes now or Andy Davis' original tunes here.

V is for Video

Is today some kind of holiday that we should be observing? I'm single - not bitterly so - and I don't tend to get all hyped about this traditionally lame holiday known to most as Valentine's Day. I typically just refer to it simply as VD (insert sexually transmitted joke here). To a music connoisseur like myself, there's one kind of valentine that makes me weak in the knees: a hot new video fresh from the editing bay. So you can imagine my excitement to find an inbox full of these types of valentines today.

I figured, while in the "holiday" spirit, it's only appropriate to pass these valentines on to you - my readers and the true lovers in my life. Stop what you're doing, which is probably watching the clock counting the minutes until your VD date arrives (hope that image doesn't spoil the night) and check out new videos from Justin Timberlake, will.i.am and Britney Spears, Lana Del ReyCher Lloyd and more

will.i.am & Britney Spears - Scream & Shout Remix (Feat Lil Wayne, Waka Flocka Flame, Hit-Boy & Diddy)

Justin Timberlake - Suit & Tie (Feat. Jay Z)

Lana Del Rey - Burning Desire

Hot Chelle Rae - Hung Up (Lyric Video)

Cher Lloyd - With Ur Love

Lil Wayne - Love Me (Feat. Future & Drake)

FrankMusik - Map

If your date's going south or you've run out of awkward conversation, here's a video that will, if nothing else, get you both laughing and create some entertaining commentary. If he doesn't laugh at the lyric "you like the Lana Del Rey pout," dump his ass on the spot. That's a deal breaker, for sure.

Video Premiere: Five Knives "All Fall Down"

It's no secret that I'm kinda (ok, totally) crushing on the electro-rockers Five Knives. But really, can you blame me? If you haven't discovered the wonders of Five Knives yet, check out why I named them the artist to watch for 2013 and grab their EP free for a limited time.

The EP's first single dropped last week with the release of the compilation and today the band premiered their ultra-hip video for the track on purevolume.com. In the video, Anna Worstell and her boys do their thing in an abandoned warehouse while the coolest fucking roller derby goes on around them. I have plans to check out the Nashville Rollergirls this weekend and I can only hope it's half as rad as it appears in this video.

Video Premiere: Rihanna & Mikky Ekko "Stay"

When Rihanna dropped her sixth studio record Unapologetic, Nashville rejoiced to see its own indie-rocker Mikky Ekko featured on the record's standout ballad "Stay." The excitement continued when the R&B songstress invited the rocker to join her on stage at Sunday's Grammy Awards's to perform the new single, which Ekko penned. The performance kickstarted quite a buzz about the new Rihanna track and the mysterious new talent that joined her.

Now, accompanied with a steamy new video, "Stay" is on track to be one of the biggest songs of the year and Ekko music's next "it" kid. Watch the video "Stay" below and pick up Mikky Ekko's newly released tracks EP on iTunes now.

First Listen: Justin / Justin

It's a post-Grammy's Justin-palooza today on Tragic Kingdom, with new music from two of music's biggest stars sharing the same name.

Last night the original Justin (Justin Timberlake) returned to the Grammy's stage with a performance (over-hyped in my opinion) of his new single "Suit & Tie" and closed with a preview of his new track "Pusher Love Girl." Today, his highly anticipated third record The 20/20 Experience is available for pre-order on iTunes. The pre-paid download comes with an instant new track from the record, 8-minutes long, called "Mirrors." Give it a listen and share your thoughts in the comment box below.

The Justin of another name - the one more widely known as just Bieber - didn't attend the award show last night with most of music's biggest names. The teen sensation's Believe record was shut out receiving no nominations, despite its massive commercial success. The news didn't sit well with the singer, or with manager Scooter Braun and in an effort to vindictively take viewers from the CBS telecast, Justin Bieber planned a livestream concert event online. Unfortunately, when even the internet couldn't handle his popularity and the site crashed, Bieber found another way to give back to his fans. The phenom released an "unfinished" new track called "You Want Me," which is streaming below now.

Pre-order Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience now on iTunes & pick up Justin Bieber's Grammy-less Believe while you're at it.

Artist to Watch: Five Knives

Last year when Five Knives emerged on the Nashville scene with their electro-inspired punk rock, it was an instant connection for the wannabe club kid inside me. The pounding synth beats and attitude-dripping lyrics - delivered effortlessly by frontwoman Anna Worstell - had me hooked.

A year of free music, introducing their fresh sound, on the band's website filled my car, iPod and home speakers. It wasn't long before the four (not five) rockers were playing all over town and one of the buzziest new bands to hit the music scene. Their energetic live show takes the whole package to the next level with Worstell fearlessly leading the pack, which includes Nathan Barlowe (formerly of Luna Halo), Zach Hall and Shane Wise. Moving from one pumped up track to another, their performance never disappoints and, when the Gwen Stefani-inspired lead singer delivers the lyric "we are the future!" from the similarly titled track, it's not hard to see why the entire venue immediately trusts her.

It was no surprise that by 2012's end, Five Knives had inked a deal with Red Bull Records and landed a spot on top of my "Artists to Watch" list for 2013. Before the ink had time to dry on their deal, the first four EP's disappeared from their site - now only in the hands of their most diehard fans - to be replaced with a full length LP this summer.

This week the band's first (official) EP dropped, featuring five (fancy that) of their catchiest tunes, which you can grab below for free! Videos accompanying the singles will be released over the next few months leading to their full length debut and a summer slot on the Van's Warped Tour. This is only the beginning of the Five Knives journey and V for Vetrano (Note: If you don't know by now, that's me. Hi! Now pay attention.) will be bringing you along for the exciting ride. Check back for more from the year's "it" band soon.

Listen! It's Vetrano!: Reality Hits Nashville

As a blogger in the digital age, I have the pleasure of sharing my thoughts and musical recommendations with thousands of people that I know personally (and intimately *wink, wink*) and others of whom I probably will never get the chance to meet. For those of you in the second category, I'm sorry I've neglected to introduce you to my highly inappropriate and snarky side. The side I'm most proud of, really.

Since the New Year, I've had the pleasure of talking to many of my readers in Nashville about what they want to see on this space. That's when "reality" hit me. So without further ado I introduce the new feature Listen! It's Vetrano! Insight into my thoughts, rants, dreams and will include both written and video commentary in the coming months. Get ready, cause shit's about to get wildly inappropriate.

And speaking of reality hitting Nashville, what's with the influx of reality stars in Music City?

My obvious love affair with music and my not-so-secret addiction to cheesy reality television can only lead to a DVR filled with today's "most watched" television programming: the highly (and sometimes not so highly) rated reality singing competitions. Yes, I watch them all and often add my own critiques of each artist's performances. In my head, I'm a more sour, yet lovable, version of Simon Cowell (Hey Simon: If you're looking for someone to fill L.A. Reid's shoes, I wear a size 13 and think I could do the job...much better than that snooze fest!)

I am not trying to let my highly praised (ok, moderately praised) judgemental commentary go to my head, but I have to question whether the influx of winners from those series landing in Nashville has anything to do with my decision to move to Music City.

Alright, I'm not that self involved -at least in this case- but it should be noted that Nashville isn't just home to country legends, a new soapy-drama series and Tragic Kingdom's own "V for Vetrano." It's now "home" to newly crowned winners of The X Factor and The Voice. The down-home country crooner, Tate Stevens, who beat out Carly Rose Sonenclar on the Season Finale of The X Factor, signed his 5-million dollar country deal with RCA Nashville. His single "Holler If You're With Me," or as I will likely refer to it as "Clearance Bin," is set to premiere during his Pepsi-sponsored commercial airing during Sunday's telecast of The Grammy's. I'm guessing this will be as hyped at Beyoncé at the Super Bowl and as talked about as Kenny Chesney's sexual orientation (i.e. not at all).

Cassadee Pope, who was named Season 3's winner on The Voice, also jumped on the Nashville bandwagon, signing a deal with Music City powerhouse Scott Borchetta's Big Machine Records. The former frontwoman of American rock band Hey Monday won over audiences with her take on country hits "Cry", "Stupid Boy" and "Over You," which was penned by Voice coach Blake Shelton and wife Miranda Lambert. Since the show's conclusion, Pope has been staying in Nashville writing with some of the biggest hitmakers in the genre and is expected to drop a single sometime in March. If my previous prediction rings true -although I'd love hear her as a female Adam Levine (minus the douche-bag attitude)- she'll be making Nashville a more permanent home.

But that's not all. Those are just two of the new additions to the reality-transplanted Nashvillians. American Idol has spawned a slew of new residents over the years, including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Kellie Pickler, Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina... aw fuck it, I'm outta breath! You get the idea. But seriously, Kelly... Carrie... call me?

Whether it was my move that inspired the future of music to join me here in wonderful Music City, or just happens to be coincidence, it sounds like Nashville's the new "it" town for music's emerging stars.

Welcome to Nashville! What's your dream?
